Picking Up Litter

Some time ago, a motorist driving along a stretch of highway was intrigued to see three elderly women with large plastic bags, picking up trash along the roadside. The driver knew that highway cleanup was often assigned to fill a community service requirement—usually for those who had debt to pay to society. He smiled as he tried to imagine what these women could possibly have done to deserve this duty.

He saw them again the next day—and the next day and the next. Finally, his curiosity got the best of him, and he pulled over, leaned out the window, and said, “Excuse me. I’ve noticed you along this stretch of road for a week now. And I couldn’t help wondering what you did to get stuck with this job.”

The women looked at each other and laughed as they realized for the first time how they must look to passersby. One of them replied, “We didn’t get assigned to do this job. We chose it! We each live alone, but we go walking together every morning, and we noticed all this litter along the highway. So we figured that if every morning, during our regular walk, we stopped long enough to take just one bag of garbage out of the world, maybe we could make a difference!” 1

All of us share the resources of this world, and all of us have a vested interest in preserving it for future generations. But not all of us stop long enough to do something about it. The world is a more beautiful place because three walking companions decided to pick up some litter every day.

But there’s another lesson from their good turn. We also share the spiritual and emotional atmosphere of this world. And there are many kinds of debris that litter that environment—unkind words, hurtful actions, discouragement, heartache, and loneliness. Wouldn’t it be a more beautiful place if each of us determined to dispose of this kind of litter—to take just one bag of garbage out of the world each day?

The kind deeds we do, the service we render, no matter how small, add to a growing circle of goodness. We can’t clean it all up at once, but as we each take our share of garbage out of the world, we make it a more beautiful place for everyone.

An Opportunity for Excellence

This year has been unlike any we can remember—and one we’ll never forget. We’ve been stretched and tested, and in the process, we’ve learned more about ourselves and our world. It has been a year of adjustments, disappointments, and canceled events. Even worse, it has been a year of loss, as many of us have lost loved ones. Sadly, no one has been left untouched by this global pandemic.

As a college president in the Midwest said of his students at the start of the outbreak: “They will put up with absence and isolation … , and they will redouble their efforts to achieve the best things. They are determined to convert this disruption into an opportunity for excellence.”

That’s not the typical way of looking at disruption or tragedy. Most of the time, we just want to minimize the damage, heal as much as possible, and try to return to normal, even if we still have to carry some scars. But could there really be something better than “normal” ahead for us? Can we “convert this disruption into an opportunity for excellence”?

For example, could our experiences make us more compassionate or more loving—what the Bible calls the “more excellent way”? Perhaps, as we remember some of the isolation we felt during lockdowns, we will find ways to reach out to people who (for whatever reasons) might still feel isolated. As we reflect on the generosity of neighbors who shared with us when grocery shelves were bare, we can find ways to share what we have with others in need. As we think of the innovations, large and small, that have helped us push through our difficulties, we can thank the medical personnel on the front lines and in the laboratories, who worked day and night to facilitate everything from ventilators to vaccines.

And perhaps most important, as we remember those who are no longer with us, we can consider how they would want us to go forward with our lives. What kind of excellence could we pursue in their memory?

Without question, the experiences of the past year will change us. We will never truly be “back to normal.” But maybe normal is not what we want anyway, as long as “an opportunity for excellence” is within reach.

This song was triggered by a line from a sermon. Bible teacher Charles Price was preaching at Spring Harvest in 1994, and illustrated some of the points in his talk by referring to an elderly Christian he knew. For many years his friend had this simple but profound saying that he would apply whatever came his way, whether challenge or tragedy: ‘For this I have Jesus’.

I was sitting on the platform, because I was leading worship in that meeting. As I listened, I began to see not only the point, but also the potential for a song. So I scribbled down a few thoughts and experimented with a melody in my head. When I had a bit of time back in my room, I started to sketch out the song.

Over the past 18 months, a series of experiences have activated my curiosity towards the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the exploration, one of the most enlightening experiences has been to tour Temple Open Houses. For my third Open House, I was given the chance to tour the St. George Utah Temple, a historic pioneer temple that started construction in 1871. It left a lasting impression as I continue to make sense of this nomad's journey, with several new questions surfacing.

In this video, I'll share takeaways from the rededicated St. George Utah Temple. It was a lot to process, so my hope is this video helpfully conveyed my reaction as best as possible.

"And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. A. One who would preach must first of all, have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He must know from the Scriptures that he has been saved from sin, and know what it means to trust Christ alone for salvation.
B. He should be able to teach someone else the basic plan of salvation, that is:
1. God Loves YOU. John 3:16
2. All have sinned and need salvation. Rom.3:23, Isaiah 64:6
3. Christ died for our sins. Romans 5:6-9
4. Christ is the Son of God and God the Son. Matt. 3:17, John 1:1-14
5. Christ is risen and alive today. I Cor. 15:3,4
6. Christ is the only way to Heaven. John 14:6 Acts 4:12
7. Salvation is a gift, not earned by works. Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8,9
C. He must maintain a regular daily devotional life of Bible reading and prayer. You cannot talk for God if you do not walk and talk with God.
D. He must believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and that God has promised to honor His Word. Isaiah 55:11
E. He must have a good testimony and a good reputation, both before the church and before the world. I Tim. 4:12
F. His own heart must be right with God: no sin allowed to remain, whether of thought, word or deed. Psalm 66:18, I John 1:9.
G. His life must be fully surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 12:1,2

Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning,
while it was still dark,
and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter
and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,
“They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we don’t know where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter
and arrived at the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him,
he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head,
not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first,
and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture
that he had to rise from the dead."

Another key to Letting Go, is the understanding that what we have, and the life we have here is a Gift from God, but we don’t own it, but we have been assigned as stewards and managers over what is already God’s. He owns EVERYTHING, and is sharing it with us!

This understanding produces a gratefulness, and yields the power and ability to let go, and to share with others what has been provided for by God, because what we have been given stewardship over is His, and if He has shared with us, our hearts should overflow with thanksgiving and with the same love and compassion with others.


Acts 2:44
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they shared everything with anyone who was in need.…

Acts 4:32
The congregation of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned.


As you can see in the book of Acts, the believers let go of EVERYTHING and SHARED EVERYTHING, as a result of the Outpouring of God’s Presence, that is Him Giving us the BEST of what He had/has, that is His Son, and His Spirit, BOTH!

When the Spirit is poured out on you, and you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you realize at that moment, that His Presence is all you need, and that if you have His Spirit, that nothing else matters, not even money.

You see our love is a result of the outpouring of His Love! We love, because He First Loved Us!

Elation Professional is "On Location" at Destiny Christian Church in Northern California where Rick Franke gives us a virtual tour of some of the lighting and video equipment that has made an impact to their congregation.

With recent upgrades to their stage and worship areas, Rick explains how the LED video panels like the EZ4, EZ6 and EVLED 1024 have allowed them to "change their style of worship".

Other enhancements also included some exterior lighting fixtures from Elation's sister company Acclaim Lighting.

Altogether, Rick and his staff, including his sixteen year-old son Caleb, have transformed Destiny Christian Church into a vibrant and colorful canvas.
