Americans react to Kamala Harris as Biden's choice to face Trump in presidential election

Following the unexpected news of U.S. President Joe Biden announcing he will step down as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, Democrats across the U.S. are expressing hope in Vice-President Kamala Harris as a worthy candidate to run against Donald Trump this November.

“[Harris] would be the only Democrat with the visibility to mount a strong campaign in this time, less than four months before Election Day,” political analyst Meena Bose said on Sunday, despite the Democratic National Convention (DNC), being less than a month away – giving Harris only four weeks to prepare a campaign.

Others were thrilled at the idea of not only the second Black president, but the first female to hold the title, too.

“I am excited for a much younger candidate. I think myself and others were kind of losing faith and Joe Biden's ability to serve another four years,” a student at Howard University said.

Though Biden, 81, has not yet addressed his decision to step down – outside the initial announcement made in a post shared to X – it is widely speculated that his age and health may have some relevance. This comes after a disastrous debate against Trump earlier in the month.
