Nigeria: 29 Children May Face Death Sentence for Protesting Against Cost-of-living Crisis | Firstpost Africa

In Nigeria, at least 29 children could face the death sentence for protesting against the government over the rising cost-of-living in the country. On Friday, Nigeria charged 76 people with ten felony counts for participating in the August protests against the government. These charges include destruction of property, public disturbance, also treason, and inciting a military coup for which if found guilty, they could face the death penalty. One-third of those charged are minors aged between 14 and 17. As per reports, four of these minors collapsed in the courtroom from exhaustion before they could enter a plea. Videos shared on social media have triggered public anger, with many pointing towards the lack of nourishment visible in the children. Politicians and civil society groups have condemned the detentions of the youth for participating in protests.
